    The assistant superintendent is expected to be an integral part of the management team and be heavily involved in all aspects of golf course management.      Assisting in recruiting, hiring, scheduling, training, and performance management of crew. This is a leadership position which relies on motivational qualities and energy that builds a team culture among the crew.

     Communicating with the superintendent in making daily golf course maintenance assignments in accordance with the agronomic / turf management plan

     Assist our mechanic to troubleshoot and maintain performance of equipment / tools / machinery

     Assist with maintaining budgets, inventory, and other necessary administrative duties.

     Execute a water management program that is coordinated with the superintendent to ensure performance and firm playing conditions

     Troubleshoot and repair irrigation system

     Make fertilizer and chemical applications in accordance with agronomic plan

    Working Hours:  At NGC, we believe we can produce at an extremely high level without working unsustainable hours. Through proper planning and efficiency we have developed a work schedule that allows us to continually improve conditions without sacrificing the entirety of our personal lives.

    Educational/experience requirements:

    Golf Course Assistant Superintendent (Supervisor) – Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department - 40 hours/week, 6am - 2pm - The City of Portland, Maine seeks a dynamic, experienced leader at Riverside Golf Course for the Department of Parks,Recreation & Facilities.

    This is a full time, year-round, working supervisory position that assists in maintaining the grounds of the City owned golf course. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Superintendent on all aspects of maintenance and overall conditions of the golf course. This position’s assignments involve specific areas of expertise including growing conditions, playing conditions, and improving daily member experience. Must be comfortable and confident with executing daily tasks ranging from mowing practices, turf repair, chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation repair, daily golf course setup, and winter recreation operations. Regularly reviews course playing conditions and determines effective methods to correct problems such as drainage, turf management, pest management and overall playing conditions. This position will supervise permanent and seasonal employees and work with private contractors working on City properties as needed.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Maintains appropriate records of work performed, employee time, equipment and material usage, and other pertinent data. Provides daily logs of work. Provides information as requested for weekly, monthly, and annual reports. Provides instruction to individuals and crews on equipment and safety in accordance with state and local regulations. Coordinates and assists with snow removal, ice rink maintenance, and grooming of Nordic ski trails at the Riverside Golf Course. Assists as needed with Departmental winter operations including sidewalk snow removal, pinch point clearing, parking lot clearing, and other City-wide winter operations tasks. Oversees crews working winter operations as needed. Performs related work as required. Requirements of Work: Considerable experience in golf course maintenance, and management; graduation from a standard high school; preferred completion of post secondary education in landscape maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills. Thorough knowledge and ability to conduct golf course maintenance, drainage, automatic irrigation systems and control of fungus, weeds and diagnose and treat turf diseases. Ability to supervise and train personnel. Experience working with a diverse workforce. Some working knowledge of light-duty equipment such as skid-steers, tool cats, backhoes, sidewalk plows. Ability to use a computer and working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office software, including Excel and Word.

    Necessary Special Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical assessment. Must have and maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.     Assistant golf course superintendent
    The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, supervises the maintenance and repair of specialty turf and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

    Typical functions:

    The assistant golf course superintendent:

    • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
    • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
    • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
    • May also serve in the chemical technician position as needed.
    • May assist in other departments (Club house, Pool and Racquets) for certain maintenance.

    Employment standards:

    Description:   Wollaston Golf Club is a Private 18 hole Golf Course located in Milton, Ma. Designed by George and Tom Fazio in 1975 the Club is rich in history, hosting the 1992 US Junior Amateur won by Tiger Woods. The Club is also home of the Fallon Cup which includes some of the best amateur players not only in New England but the entire country. The 152 acre property includes a full driving range and chipping area as well as 4 tennis courts and an olympic size pool. Recently the club implemented a master plan by architect Bryan Bowers of Fazio Golf Course Design. Included in the scope of the work is changing the slopes of the greens to accommodate modern day green speeds, while also moving bunkers to fit modern day length. Extensive tree work is on-going to enhance vistas of the Blue Hills Reservation which abuts the property.

    Details:  The Second Assistant will work closely with the Superintendent and the Lead Assistant on the day to day operations. The right candidate will be responsible for chemical and fertilizer applications as well as small crew management. A working knowledge of weed/insect/and disease identification is a plus. Candidates will be asked to hand water green and tee surfaces to ensure firm and fast conditions. Troubleshooting of Toro E-OSMAC Irrigation System will be required. There will be a major focus in the coming seasons for in-house drainage projects.
