Job Description: Golf Course Construction Assistant Superintendent

Reports to:  Director of Agronomy & Superintendent

Salary: $60,000

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Stowe Country Club is an 18-hole private golf club originally designed by William Mitchell that opened in 1969. The golf course is set in the iconic village of Stowe, VT with views of the Worcester mountain range, Mount Mansfield, and Camel’s Hump. The golf course is undergoing a major renovation. All greens, tees, bunkers, fairways, and irrigation are being renovated. Stowe Country Club has partnered with Beau Welling Design as the architect, Paul Granger as the irrigation consultant, and NMP Golf Construction as the general contractor. We will open the newly renovated front nine and close the back nine for renovation in the spring of 2025. The grand opening of the full 18-holes will be in the spring of 2026. A new 13,000 square foot turf care center was built in 2024 to support the newly renovated golf course.

 

This position provides a unique opportunity to assist in all aspects of the renovation and grow-in of a golf course. This includes responsibilities such as seeding and fertilizing playing surfaces, watering newly seeded or sodded areas, and developing and implementing irrigation and turf health programs. The role also involves overseeing job performance, delegating work assignments, inspecting course conditions, and managing small construction projects. Additionally, the assistant superintendent supervises the proper use of equipment and assists with weekend operations when needed. After construction, the position helps maintain and mature the golf course to world-class standards. The Construction Assistant Superintendent may also serve as acting superintendent in their absence.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with the implementation and execution of the Grow-In portion of the Agronomic Planner.
  • ·        Seed playing surfaces, apply pre-plant fertilizers and water newly seeded and sodded to ensure optimal turf growth and quality.
  • ·        Develop and implement grow-in irrigation programs to support newly seeded or sodded areas.
  • ·        Apply turf health products to maintain and improve the quality of the playing surfaces.
  • ·        Assist with agronomic practices to enhance the overall health and performance of the turf.
  • Provide training for employees so they understand all aspects of the newly constructed golf course.
  • Assist with the establishment of training programs to effectively produce a top-quality product while still maintaining good harmonious working relationships.
  • Oversees the completion of work assignments by crew members and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards, and machinery use.
  • Assist in planning, supervising, and scheduling of the maintenance of the newly constructed golf course features.
  • Responsible for insuring proper working operation of all facets of newly constructed drainage and irrigation systems.  Assists with the irrigation scheduling and system repairs and maintenance of the newly constructed system.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ·        Degree in turfgrass management, golf course management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • ·        At least three years of experience in golf course maintenance operations.
  • ·        Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • ·        In-depth knowledge of irrigation systems, fertilizer application, and chemical treatments, with hands-on experience in turfgrass science, agronomy, and integrated pest management.

·        Basic knowledge and the ability to operate and maintain turf equipment such as lawnmowers, carts, trucks, tractors and mini-excavators.

·        Basic knowledge of electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers and various types of pumps and pumping systems.

·        A solid understanding of golf course rules.

  • ·        Strong computer skills and the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • ·        Ability to work well in a team, manage conflict effectively, and maintain effective employee and public relations.
  • ·        Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure, maintain a positive attitude, and adapt to changing situations.
  • ·        Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
