Position / Title:         Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Facility Description:  The Willowbend golf course consists of 27 holes on three nines.  The practice facilities include an expansive driving range, short game area and putting green.  For many years home of the Willowbend Children’s Charity Pro Am, the course makes the most of its dramatic setting, as it winds along Shoestring Bay and through the property’s cranberry bogs.  Over the years, Willowbend’s championship course has played host to the biggest names in golf, including Greg Norman, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Rory McIlroy.

The original golf course was designed by Dr. Michael Hurzdan.  The club is owned by Southworth Development and operated by Southworth Golf.

Other Willowbend facilities include a 35,000 square-foot clubhouse with locker rooms, social areas and a top rated restaurant; a 13,000 square-foot fitness center, eight Har Tru tennis courts, and an Olympic–size swimming pool with a poolside Italian Bistro.

Position Description:  Willowbend is looking for a self-motivated, energetic, positive leading individual.  Applicants will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, organizational skills, verbal and written communication abilities, keen eye for attention to detail and the willingness to learn. The Assistant Superintendent will be working closely with the Superintendent on planning and executing agronomic and cultural programs for the property. The successful candidate will assist in managing and organizing the daily operation of hourly employees, must be proficient in pesticide/fertilizer applications and calibration, proper course set up, irrigation repair and maintenance, record keeping, and water management.  Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts pesticide license within 6 months of hire date. Prior experience with bi-lingual crew is helpful but not mandatory.

  • Plan, develop and execute the activities necessary to assure that the golf course is set up and maintained in top quality condition.
  • Recruit, hire and train all golf course and grounds maintenance employees.
  • Ensure that all staff follow the golf course maintenance operating standards.
  • Follows and implements the Club’s rough management plan.
  • Identify, provide costing, and implements annual off-season golf course capital projects.
  • Meet the financial objectives of the club by controlling labor and operational costs.
  • Keep abreast of current industry techniques as it relates to golf course maintenance and equipment.
  • Regularly communicate with the membership regarding course conditions and maintenance practices.


  • Basic understanding of agronomic programs for turf maintenance.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and components related to best practices in consideration of agronomics.
  • Must be comfortable and willing to “roll up the sleeves” and lead by positive example.
  • Ability to multi-task while remaining focused on the key objectives of the property and position.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Golf and/or the ability to play the game of golf.
  • The ability to work in a team environment.

Experience and Education Level Required:  Two or Four year degree in Turfgrass Management or related field. Candidates should have a proven track record of providing exceptional golf course conditions.
